The inspiration for this post is multi-faceted.
1) It's a snow day at Penn State (again), which means I'm working from my home desk. My typical setup is pictured here, and includes a space heater, some useful books, and at least one of my feline roommates (hence the two boxes). All this photo is missing is my third main mammal, but he was sleeping by the other window... |

2) I wanted to write about something fun since I've been feeling a bit winter blues-y lately, and so I opened Twitter to see which Sci Comm feed I'd like to highlight this week. Quite a few of the media outlets I follow were talking about zebra stripes today, but the quote pictured here stuck out to me. Sure, mammal pelages might not have the most interesting color patterns, but mammals are ANYTHING BUT BORING! Those who've experienced what I'll be talking about today get what I mean.
3) We have our monthly lab meeting tomorrow. I spent some of my day baking a treat to go with the theme, then I had to add some updates to my slide. I went clicking through our shared Google folder, and saw this:

That's right, it's nearly the most wonderful time of the year!
And no, I don't mean Christmas, not by a long shot.
In just 12 more days, the March Mammal Madness brackets will drop
and the games will begin!!! Excitement depicted here:

I've talked about MMM is before so I won't go on and on about how cool it is as a classroom resource, how this is one of the most effective sci comm campaigns I've ever seen, or how much fun we have participating as a lab/department/etc. I will just encourage you to go check it out for yourself. Rules and guidelines are here and social media links are here (Twitter, Facebook). Just for funsies, I'll also link to #MMMPSU so you can see how strong our gif games are when it comes to this annual battle of champions (you'll notice Kate Lesciotto is a big fan, she always coordinates the Anth department's bracket competition. Thanks Kate!).
I'll be sure to come back to this post on March 4th and upload my bracket so y'all can make fun of me for losing miserably. In the meantime, I'll be snuggling up with my three main mammals and praying for this winter to get over itself. Cheers everyone!
